Ottaal

Ottaal is my first screen play realized as film, for which I have won the National award (2014) for Best Screenplay (adapted).

OTTAAL is not my first screenplay. In fact, I had previously writtena screenplay which was based upon the co-relation between the earth, man and God. It was an ‘Environmental subject’ with a view of social commitment. Once I wrote the screenplay, the first movie director who came to my mind was ‘Director Jayaraj’. This was because I had previously viewed many of his classics movies. I tried to contact him several times. Once I got him on line and we discussed about my screenplay. Since he was busy with another film shooting, he asked me to call again. I tried to contact him through a friend and I sent my screenplay to him. I was extremely curios to know Mr.Jayaraj’s feedback. He read the screenplay and gave me a very good feedback and appreciated me as well. We were planning to proceed with that project, but unfortunately there came a delay in between, and the project went pending. – This is when Mr.Jayaraj asked me to prepare the screen play for OTTAAL (A wicker basket for catching fish).

OTTAAL Story is based on the world famous Russian writer Anton Chekhov’s short story ‘Vanka’. A Tale of an orphan boy who works under a cobbler and the hardships he endures. Actually, Mr.Jayaraj wanted to make a film based on the story ‘Vanka’ a while ago. He got the spark from a picture which was published in the Hindu news paper. Mr.Jayaraj was able to connect that picture with ‘Vanka’ story. He showed me the picture and we discussed about it in detail. Mr.Jayaraj asked me to make a screenplay based on the story vanka. It was very big challenge to make a screenplay based on a world famous writer’s world famous story. But Jayaraj had given me courage to write the screenplay. Since he liked my previous screenplay and my Nature and man related writings style he had a full confidence on me. (My previous screenplay subject was a family story based on an environmental subject.)

Now a day, unfortunately our children are away from the nature. But here in ottaal the child character so close to the nature. So the nature also gets notified in this movie. May be that could be the reason we got the best nature film award also. Infact ottaal movie gives a strong message against the dirty issue of child labor system. Anton checkov had written vanka story in 1886 that time in Russia the child labor or child slavery was going on. Now this is the 21st century, still we can see the evilness of child labor system in our world. How the way people are trying to catch fish by using ottaal, the same way in many places many people are trying to trap children in their ottaal basket and using for many other purposes. It’s cruel. It’s savagery, It is heinous, ruthless, uncivilized or barbaric, I don’t have words to explain. So we need to tell this reality to our society. We are trying to show this message to our society through our movie.

My next project will be my first screenplay that is still pending. Simultaneously I have been writing another script on the back drop of the Himalayas.
